Inscript exists at the overlap of cutting-edge technologies and experimental thinking that dictate our emergent realities. Focusing on design, language, and communication, Inscript explores boundaries and provides a space for sharing, learning, and brazen experimentation.

Our formative five-day festival showcases inspiring presentations at the overlap of typography and today’s evolving industries, including: artificial, augmented, and virtual realities, creative computing, font technologies, and innovative use of craft.

Join us as we scan the limits of our collective, utterly global, unbound futures.

The 2023 festival is now over—please sign up for our newsletter to hear when we reopen for 2024!

AI and typography—a dialogue between humans & nature!

Creativity and innovation are no longer exclusively the province of humans, but the result of collaboration, a game of interpretation in the dialogue between humans and machines. This is the world in which we live today, where artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving and new scenarios are opened. The world is facing a new era of typographical artifacts, typography that kisses the rigor of the function to embrace new expression values.

    Words of Type

Even with all the books and articles about these topics, access to typographic knowledge is not as international and easy as it could be. Most of the resources are in English, books are either out of print or cost too much with or without shipping costs, and knowledge about writing systems other than Latin alphabet is way too scarce. That is why Words of Type has been created! An online and multilingual encyclopedia of typographic terms.

    Lisa Huang

Lisa Huang is a French and Chinese typeface designer specializing in Latin and Hanzi scripts. Born in France with Chinese roots, she grew up with French and Chinese cultures simultaneously. Today, her practice of typography reflects this multicultural life. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Art Direction in Paris, she pursued a specialization in Type Design at Type@Cooper, followed by a Master’s degree at TypeMedia. She is now an independent designer, dedicating her time to activities related to typography along with her design practice, focused on Latin and Hanzi scripts.

    Inspiring Meaningful Connections

Whether online or offline, today's media landscape is one thing above all: loud. More and more messages are reaching us through more and more channels, fighting for the scarcest commodity on the advertising market: our attention. To survive in this shark tank, it's no longer enough for designers to simply project their images and messages to the outside world. It's about leaving a lasting impression. One way to achieve this goal is through the use of generative design.

    Patrik HĂŒbner

As an award-winning programming designer and creative director, Patrik HĂŒbner has been working at the intersection of communication and technology for over 15 years. Employed in traditional design for years, he discovered Creative Coding in 2014 and was one of the first to use the explorative creative method to rethink branding. Visual Narratives: Typing Letters and Connecting Words

What if a typeface itself could tell stories? I would like to share the approach and process of a new way of storytelling through the "Flefixx" project—an idiosyncratic visual language and typeface system that explores typography as a medium for storytelling. It's not about etymology; rather, it's a way to find and create images in the common combinations of letters that make up words. It allows to connect unrelated words into a sequence of narratives.

    Technological Reappropriation as Artistic Practise

JĂŒrg Lehni's works are the expression of an appreciation for technology as a common good that exists as part of cultural discourse and not outside of it. In his talk, he will focus on a reoccurring theme in this practise: the notion of reappropriating existing technologies, in a ongoing quest to find their often hidden poetic potential and treat them as open structures similar to our relationship with language, rather than as a means for large corporations to lock consumers into a seemingly cozy, standardised environment.

    JĂŒrg Lehni

JĂŒrg Lehni works collaboratively across disciplines, exploring the nuances of technology, tools and the human condition. His work examines the roles of software-assisted artistic expression, its physical reproduction, and the poetic potential of mechanical and computational gestures. Lehni has shown work internationally at the MoMA, SFMOMA, Walker Art Center, Centre Pompidou, Institute of Contemporary Arts London, Victoria and Albert Museum, Kunsthaus ZĂŒrich, etc.His works have been acquired by the collections of SFMOMA, HEK Basel and the Christoph Merian Foundation.

    Material Type

Letterforms are languages presented in a visual form. For a very long time, they have remained entirely artificial, meticulously crafted by human beings, and for human beings to read. Human designers always intend to pursue perfection, even a tiny dot can be a critical design decision. However, imagine the existence of an “imperfect” type - letterforms are not “fully shaped by human hands”. This is how the idea for Material Type came to be. Material Type is a series of type projects exploring the natural properties of different materials and utilizing them as a foundation for typography design.

Branding

“To define a creative idea as an expression of the brand, we asked ourselves: what are the core elements that are distinctive of the digital festival? Our answer is: the people, their voice, their appearance, and their work.”—Gianpaolo Tucci and Kacper Pietrzykowski.

Each individual has a unique tone of voice. To represent that, Tucci and Pietrzykowski developed a visual tool to convey the following core values: to be unique according to the individual and their voice; to serve as an accent through the mark to highlight an individual’s work; to enable the revealing of works and individuals through voice, and to celebrate the Inscript community as the connection point that embraces all individuals and their voice through a shared passion. Visit the dedicated page to interact further with the effects, and to download and share your results.
